Default NAV Update

I just received the updated NAVTEQ map software and map DVDs today. The thing is that I didn't order them. Has this happened to anyone else?? It's normally $199.

I received the same thing and I have no idea why. The only reason I can think of is that maybe its because I had the MyGig replaced under warranty and they wanted to make sure I had the latest maps? Or maybe I bought during a free upgrade promo and didn't even know it? Either way, I guess I'll take it! I wonder how many others got this in the mail.

The sneaky bastards... Although the sent us the Map Update discs, you need an activation code in order to install it. The activation code is supposedly generated from your VIN, so it can only be used to update your vehicle. NavTeq is prepared to sell this activation code to us for the bargain price of $199... WTF!!?? I think my wife's Garmin Nuvi was less than that. Anyway, unless somebody comes out with a keygen program that determines how you can get your activation code, I'll be passing on installing this update. Besides, the release date of this update is Feb of 2009, almost a year old already.

Here's what I suspect Chrysler and Navteq are doing... The map update version has a release date of Feb 09, so it is going on a year old. With a purchase price of $199, I'm willing to bet they didn't sell a lot this year with people cutting back. So they more than likely had a large surplus inventory of Feb 09 discs laying around. If they come out with a new version (which I bet will be soon), these are junk. So instead of just tossing them all, they tried a 'Hail Mary' move and mailed them out to customers who have older versions. We customers who get these software update discs in the mail get all excited and decide that if we have it already, we might as well use them. So we pay the $199 fee for the activation code. Bam! They make a sale that they wouldn't have made had they not sent them out to the masses. And at a hefty price tag of $199, they don't have to sell many to more than recoup the cost of mailing them all out in the first place. I think I'll wait for a few more software revisions until I pay that kind of money for a map update.

I got my nav update discs today and I though, "oh cool, udates and no charges, I guess Chrysler is cool". Then I read the pamphlets inside the disc case and it tells me that the updates cost $199. For $199 bucks they can kiss my a$$. For the price they charge for these trucks you should get the first couple of updates free. That's what Chevy did for the nav in my Vette.

I'll wait until they build a few more new roads and freeways around me before I fork over a couple of hundred bucks for a nav update.

To answer your question, no. The update they sent us all is Version 1.220. According to the site, there have been two newer updates (Version 1.295 and then Version 2.043). So not only are they charging us, it's not even the most up-to-date version.

I have to give them credit from a marketing perspective....send them out and figure that people are lazy and wouldn't order the discs on their own but if they have them why not use them? The thing I find funny is that if there are two newer software versions a new NAV update for 2010 will be out in a few months, why not at least sell it at a discount? $49 or something? Getting something for the discs is better than nothing and the shipping costs, etc. are already a sunk cost.

I think you guys are talking about two different types of updates. The application software update that you can d/l from the Unofficial MyGIG Information Site does nothing to update the map database which is still $199 from NAVTEQ. I just looked and the Feb 2009 disc that they sent to a couple of people here is still the latest update they have available.
