1993 Dodge Ram R12 R134a conversion
So I am in a middle of a dilemma.
I have to replace the blower for my 1993 Dodge B250. To do so, I have to remove the AC system above it. Thus, I have to discharge the R12 and evenutally refill with r12.
This charge to refill the R12 is $375 in CA where R12 is $30 a pound; plus replace rates.
Now I am thinking about converting to R134a. My understanding that I will need to:
- empty R12
- flush system to remove existing oil
- replace drier
- replace fittings to R134a
- replace R12 label to R134a
Do I need barrier hoses?, replace O-rings? new compressor? Neoprene seals?
I am expecting "It depends" answers, if any.
Anyone done this on a Dodge Van?
Any advice?

Well, it all depends.
The first thing I would do is consult the dealer for your question at hand. Visit the parts desk. Get an understanding if this a doable project. Next, get a price on all of the required parts from them. You will need this to then shop around for aftermarket kits that upgrade to 134a.
OR ...
You could yank out the A/C system and drive with the windows down during the Canadian summers. Sure, a few days will push into some high temps, but it's not all summer long like NC, USA. Does your van have powered windows? Even aftermarket power window kits are available too.
Those are some thoughts. A few years ago, I took out the A/C R12 system out of my previous 1985 Dodge Caravan. It had powered front windows and the pop-out rear windows to keep cool.

Thanks;
I think I will go with the minimal installaton and wait for the compressor to seize within the first couple of minutes after the conversion. Clean and purge the system to remove all of the previous oils.
Replace the broken blower.
Replace the drier.
Replace the fittings
Put R134a in there and see if it takes.
I there are still problems, pull it out.
I have power windows and this is only a second vehicle for camping.
I hear that people survived for thousands of years without AC.
I just want to try it. For $240 I can get rebuilt compressor for 134a. Otherwise that major costs will be below $100.
I was hoping to not be the first.

I was able to remove the blower without removing AC system.
Thank you socket elbows.
Had to disassemble the blower while in the engine because I couldn't get it out.
AC system stays R12 a little linger.
I am always looking for a good compressor on ebay.
