Default Locking Differential

Could anyone please give me some estimates on how much it would cost to put a locking differential (limited slip) on my 2004 Ram 1500 4x2?

Yeah, you can purchase it aftermarket, just wasn't sure how much it would cost to put on my Ram. Usually this is only done with older trucks, but I figured it wouldn't be that difficult becuz it doesn't really involve a lot of electronics (some, but not a lot, not to the point that it isn't worth messing with).

Just put an Auburn and 4.56's in my truck. The gears were 170 the Auburn was 370 and install was 280.. If you're not getting gears, you should expect just under $700

Hmm, that's going to be too much for me, I could do about $400, maybe a tad more, but that's it. I'd rather have 4x4 anyways. All 2nd gen Dodge 4x4's in 4 Hi or 4 Low have the dif's locked, right? I notice they don't just say "4 Hi" but "4 Hi LOCK", so I assumed that means the dif's are locked up. This isn't the case with 3rd gen's too is it?

3rd gen 4x4's do NOT automatically come with LSD or any type of locking/limited slip diff's, by default. I believe ONLY the power wagon has lockers by default (standard).

My 2006 is one of them that does not have locking/LSD either front or back, and it causes me major problems, so I too am in the market for replacement. I am liking the TruTrak (spelling possibly incorrect) based on what I've read so far, for the rear, but haven't seen anything for the front as of yet.

Yeah it is expensive, but worth it if you do any wheeling. As for the lockers, it depends on the model that you get. I don't know about the 2nd gen rams, but more than likely they don't really have 'locker' differentials. The 3rd gens don't have lockers (except for the Power Wagon) they have limited slip-type diffs. which means there's only one power wheel to each diff. If the 3rd gens don't have lockers, I don't see why the 2nd gens would.. But I am not completely sure.

I don't know for sure either, I was just making assumptions since they have the "4 Hi LOCK" and "4 Lo LOCK" which I haven't ever seen on non-Dodge 4x4's (Ram, Dakota, Durango). I mean, the "LOCK" isn't there for nothing surely.

Well I don't know where you are located, but I bought my gears off of ebay they are Yukon 4.56's, and I got them installed at a shop called 10,000 RPM in Palmdale California.

Oh, you're not too far from me.
