A heat gun isn't that intimidating of a tool. I use one often at work to take decals off trucks. I compare it to buffing, you don't want to leave the buffer in one place for to long as it will build up to much heat and burn the paint, same with the heat gun don't focus on one area for to long or it'll soften the paint and mess it up, wave it around like you'd be drying your hair or whatever.
