Default Why catch can and plug wires?

I have reada couple of posts here that say one of the first mods that should be done is to get a catch can and plug wires? Is there a problem with oil coming out of the pcv when the car is pushed hard? And, whats the deal with the stock wires? Are they weak, and if so, is the coil pack also not that great? BTW have had mine for a few days, and it is AWESOME!</P>

Did you guys "break it in" before driving it hard, or get on it right away? I have read many different opinions on break in methods. Some say to take it easy for a while, and other say to flog the crap out of it the first 600 miles, then drive normal. What where your approaches?</P>

There's an insert in your owners manual that says how they want you to break it in, and for how long. I work at a chrysler dealer and did the Pre Delivery Inspections for a while and at the training class for it the inspector wanted to make sure that three things were done. One Drive the cars at least ten miles.</P>

Two Make sure every thing on the car operates properly.</P>

Three Beat the living hell out of it, because if it won't take it when it's new it never will.</P>

the oil is pushed through the pcv and into the intake, where
it is either sucked into the engine and burned or it condenses
and runs down to the intercooler (hampering its effectiveness).
the harder you drive it and the more you boost it, the more oil
you get in your intercooler and blackening your tailpipes.
i had oil in my intercooler pipe at 1000 miles, and was cleaning
the black off my tailpipes twice a week. after installing a catch
can, no more oil in intercooler, and i clean my tailpipes way
less. it all depends on how you drive it.

its not that the stock ignition system is weak (the stock coil has
the same specs as the MSD replacement). the problem is
that the spark plug wires are too close to the turbo. the heat
breaks down the #4 wire pretty quickly. Aftermarket wires
are designed to handle the heat from being so close to the
turbo. my factory wire #4 was turning white by 3000 miles.

one other thing you should do is regap your plugs.
if your running factory boost levels, gap your plugs to .050
if your running more boost, gap your plugs to .045

What do you do to "Gap your plugs"? I haven't done this on any car before.

Go to Autozone and ask for a spark plug gapper/gap gauge, ask for the wire type they are more accurate. The hook part on the spark plug is the ground and the metal tip protruding from the ceramic just under the ground is the electrode. Find the correct size on the gapper and insert it between the ground and the electrode. It should drag slightly between the two when it is at the proper gap. If it is loose or doesn't drag slightly, then you need to close the gap until it drags slightly when you put it between the two, if you get a wire gapper it should have one or two hooks on it to place on the base of the ground so that you can tilt it back and forth to open or close the gap. And if the gapper will not pass between the ground and the electrode, then simply open the gap a little until the gapper drags slightly.<edited><editID>71ROADRUNNER</editID><editDate>37995.143287037</editDate></edited>

<FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Boy, somebody not knowing how to gap a sparkplug makes me feel old! (Woops, I AM old, 52 at last count!) But I did some thinking and it has been quite awhile since I had togap or regap a sparkplug, except on my motorcycles. If we're supposed to regap them to .050, what is the factory sending them out with? BTW, the "catch-can" recommendation is something I'm not familiar with...what's involved in puttingone in?</FONT></P>

Disregard my last question, I found install directions on another forum and even a graphic of the setup...I sent off for a Greddy Catch Can today from turboneons.com...should see it in a few days. I also plan to get a set of spark plug wires from Performance Automotive in Houston, Texas, just down the road from here in San Anrtonio.</P>

Anything else I need as far as"must have items"?</P><edited><editID>dustyloins</editID><editDate>38000.7501967593</editDate></edited>
