I am wanting to replace the factory gauges in my truck, and get some pieces painted. I was wondering, how hard it was to take off the dash etc to get to the gauges and air vents?</P>

What year Dak. The dash on my 97 is super easy to remove.
The Black trim just pops out, then there is a small number of
phillips head screws that hold it on. If I remember right the
lower right one is a pain in the you know what to put back in
just because of the angle that the screw is placed. once you
get the cluster unscrewed there are two plugs in the back of the
cluster and a cable that attaches to the gear indicator that you
have to remove. the cable is held on with a phillips head screw
also. All in all it is about 2 minutes total to remove the cluster.
Thanks for you help, I really appreciate it. Have you removed your shift knob ever? I thought i could loosen it by twisting, but didnt get anywhere with that. plus, i wont have the replacement till friday so i didnt want to strip it out or something and not have anything to go back on. Yah, my dash in my 94 Ram is the same... very simple... easiest thing to break...? More or less, it's just cracking the trim pieces, just be gentle enough. LOL!
As for the shift knob, there isn't a screw on the undersize of the knob to loosen it, is there? (I'm guessing...) LOL!

As far as i could tell no, wasent looking though, rather using my fingers to feel around for it. No luck! Im guessing that I just may have to get a monkey wrench.....hehehe and twist it off. Hey about those mirrors. Are they or can they be power? They look good but I don 't want to loose my power mirrors. I guess I have become lazy since I have had all power. And where did you get those mirrors. Good luck on the shift knob thing though. I have an automatic for now. I am trying to swap to the manual trans but have to find out what I need to do. The V8 4X4 was not available with a manual trans.

The Mirrors are APC Sport mirrors. Come in black will paint them later. They are not powered but have blue dimmer glass, I actually found them on e-bay for like $40. They do make power mirrors etc. as well, same design.</P>
definitely check for a set screw before you try to spin it off,
sometimes on the shift knob they use set screws so it wont loosen up on
you. if you dont see one, its a safe bet you just gotta spin it off
counterclockwise.
