Default 99 ram 1500 remote start

I am preparing to install an alarm with remote start on my truck. I've gone over all the directions and wiring diagrams and i think i understand every thing except for on the wiring diagrams they all say for the starter output you have to use a relay for remote start. I'm okay with most electrical stuff but i don't fully understand relays and I dont want to mess anything up. So, how would I hook up the relay to the starter and the output from the alarm so it works and nothing explodes. Thanks for any help!
