Default Question of the Week: Does the 2014 Ram HD 6.4L Hemi have enough power?

We have learned that the 2014 Ram HD will offer 410 horsepower and 429lb-ft of torque - but is that enough?

Yeah, 410 horsepower and 429 lbs of torque is a lot, but it's all top end power. Where's the down low grunt you want and need in a heavy duty truck? Just my two cents.

What everyone needs to realize, is that the Ram's 5.7 Hemi puts out 395HP and 407TQ

The extra .6 liters gives you ONLY an additional 15HP and 22TQ.

And since 5.7 bolt-ons will quickly bring you above those gains.....

NO. The 6.4 Hemi does not have enough power.

Needs more low end torque. Horsepower? Oh well. The torque needs to be something like 450-500. More like the iron block V10 of the old days.

Presumably the peak numbers went at the expense of the area under the torque curve...

When considering a towing vehicle it all depends on value to me. The Cummins diesel is about a $7-8K bump up in cost for the HD, while for the 1500 a $2850 option for the new 3.0L diesel engine over the 5.7L.... and this 6.4L is a $1500 option over the 5.7L. Yet this engine will only get a 6-speed and not the new 8-speed. That right there is a downer point as I'd hope for that 10-15% better mileage from the 8-speed. I'd really want to see the torque curve and compare the 5.7L to this engine. Also besides the EcoDiesel, would have been awesome to see a turbo pentastar V6 somewhere in the lineup for Ram/Dodge.....

They really need to add direct injection already and catch up to the competition in terms of technology and kick up that 410 HP/TQ number up 10-15% to around 450-460 HP/TQ.

With those numbers you may as well save your money and buy a 5.7 hemi instead...

A lot depends on where in the RPM range the 6.7 develops it's peak HP/torque and how wide the power band really is. It really should be able to develop more like 435-450 HP/torque though and still have the durability for truck usage. I have the 5.7 and love it but would sacrifice some power to move the peak down in the RPM range which IMO would make the power more useable in a pick up. Another plus IMO would be to offer a manual trans for heavy towing/hauling especially on the hills like we have here in PA and WV.

no if you want to have power ...you can not get it from gas ... diesel will out do any gas Eng. and get the millage you need ... so it costs a extra 8 grand over the 1500 bucks ... you make it up with the fuel you will save and will last a lot longer ... but if you are at a drag strip the HEMI will beat the diesel in stock form

My 12 year old iron block/heads V10 makes more torque than that! Is that the best they can do with 12 years of engine development?

Rocket's two cents...

This is crap, what I expect from the hemi is:

80% of its torque available from 2000-5000 rpm
Max tq upwards of 500 ft lbs
Max hp over 420

This is a 6.4L engine for christ's sake, it should be pumping out some serious power stock. It is an embarrassment that the figures are this low.
