Most factories are hot and uncomfortable. I working in an injection molding factory for 18 years. 135 degrees in some ares with a few fans. Made a lot less money than the local Ford plant workers do.
Factory work isn't made to be a comfortable, easy job. Never has been.
I now work in an unairconditioned, barely heated, cannery plant. 50 yr old machinery and metal dust in the air. It pays the bills and i am grateful to have a job.
I think it would be much more cost effective for Fiat to build over here. Shipping from Italy would be very costly. It will take time and many changes will come before all is said and done.
I know that many good people have and may still lose jobs. The fact remains that there would be no Chrylser jobs today if Fiat wouldn't have intervened when they did.
Obama bought out 70% of GM. They are losing many GM brands and employees as well.
I think that I have more faith in Fiat doing some good than I would relying on the government to run the company. They can't run anything right.

Its a bit more than that. They also get a piece of the 50% the uaw has. So most have said its about 30 percent total.

True. Defeated by the Germans, perhaps we will fare better with the Italians.

To complain and fret about the fiat purchase would be foolish. I'd like to remind everyone that ferrari was going bankrupt, now they have the most beautiful cars, the nicest factory, the most loyal workers, and tonnes of money. Not to mention ferrari's most memorable and iconic cars have been made SINCE fiat bought the company. Also, alphas are pretty damn nice too.

If you read the plan Chrysler submitted to Congress, only the first models will be imported. After that, they will be produced here. It was one of the terms of the last bailout loans. Yeah the unions and Chrysler were strong-armed into agreeing to the mergerby Obama, but with the union now holding the majority stake and no way for FIAT to have full control unless the union does something stupid, this is a win-win. Don't forget that Chrysler was the highest profit-per-car company until they got r@ped by !@#* Benz. They still have the leanest production costs, tied with Toysh*ta. This is going to be a great partnership.
