Default Ideas for a 71 Challenger...

Hey guys, do to recently family problems... i have come into possession of a 71 challenger.. this car basically has been a broken promise of my entire life by my dad of resoring it.. now that hes given me full controll, i wanna get started on this thing asap.. It was orignally a 318 auto BUT i have the 4 speed, clutch pedals, AND 340 sixpack from a 71 duster(i think) and im about to start working on this car. Any resources for this car would be great.. wether it be where i can get a hayne manual to rebuild books for the block... ALSO if anyone knows a good machine chop in North Jersey(bergen county) please let me know cause i really want to send the block out to get done asap... thanks alot guys.. any information would be great!

-Mike

The 318 is a venerable lil' workhorse that has spirit -- if you don't have the cash for a 360, a 340, or a big block (yes, in that order), then start looking at working with what you've got. [&:]

First, you'll probably need this: How to Rebuild Small Block Mopars by Don Taylor. Probably be a bit helpful.

When you rebuild the 318, go with ported & polished 360 heads, or if you can afford it, Edelbrock aluminum heads ($1200?). MP now sells a cut 360 crank that'll fit 318's now, so you could get 349-350 cubes out of her, too. Aluminum intake would be nice as well -- but beyond the basics, the details of the build are beyond me.

Upper 300-horse 318, that's not too shabby -- plus if you keep the 340 Six-Pak carbs and intake (which would be sweet, really, I can't think of a better looking intake), nobody would be the wiser...
