Question Looking to rebuild trans 1973 RR

I have a 1973 Roadrunner with a 318 and a 727 torqueflite and the trans needs rebuilt. Me and my Dad and considering buying a How-to book and a rebuild kit and taking on the task ourselves to save some cash. My dad has experience in rebuilding manual transmissions but has never done a automatic. Is this recommended or should we have a Specialist do it? Any tips on the rebuild?

Thanks, I am considering going with a Cope Racing Trans rebuild kit. Should i go ahead and open the transmission to see if I need anything extra with the kit?

not being trans expert i can only give this idea. this is an EXTERNAL filter. the old auto zone 2210 magenfine filter is no longer available at auto zone. BUT i did find the same thing as JX-160 brand-- ATP. at a real parts house uses 3/8" tube. ONLY use high pressure hose. SAE J1019 217 psi working. NOT fuel hose for a carb engine.
