Default Replace catalytic converter 07 Caliber

Way past the mileage that the catalytic converter should be replaced. No check engine codes but the smell is like spent gun powder or whatever, best I could describe that.
Question is this: has anyone done this and any tips may recommend?
I am thinking cutting off the where it enters the exhaust pipe then maybe chisel the piece stuck inside the exhaust pipe.
Also, the bolts at the flange and not breaking them, probably PB blaster would get them to unscrew?
Thanks, Rich

07 Caliber 2.0 gas CVT
check back with me (first time to replace freeze plug) but....what fit is 1 13/64 inch
it was tight fit and used Seal All to insure it wouldn't leak...get some miles on it 'n see if it holds. location:driver side head, above the thermostat assy.
cheers

I didn't know there was a certain mileage where the converter should be replaced. If there are no codes, then the converter should be fine. The rear O2 sensor monitors cat efficiency. Your approach to replacement sounds reasonable.

i would try a different fuel station for the next 4 tanks. The fuel may have a high sulfur content. if that does not change anything it may need a cat.

any lack of power?

Well guys, I should wait...I thought I knew anti-freeze odor but found a leaking freeze plug (expansion plug). It is in the head, driver side just above the thermostat assy. Yesterday a friend came over and pull it out I spent some time finding a few that would fit. Its about 30mm but our local dealer parts guy tried to find the part number but it is not listed.
Hopefully I will put this all back together this morning before the rain starts.
OEM O2 sensors replaced last year, and no really loss of power but I replaced the plugs yesterday.
Thanks

If the cat isn't clogged and robbing power, I would not change it. I would only change it if you get a CEL code for inefficient cat performance or if it starts to rattle because the guts have broken.

Must be blowby even though it doesn't use much oil, the throttle plate/intake area with some oil; clean up caused me to look into an oil separator for the PCV line. No more odor in the cab. What I used looks like a separator that is used in air compressor systems used to remove water.... PCV is working normal.

Sounds like a good idea. With about 1/4 million miles, a little blow by is to be expected..
