Default 1998 Caravan Transmission Solenoid problem

Hi. I have a 98 Caravan LE, 3.0L engine. The "Service Engine Soon" light came on after driving it for about 40 minutes, and from then on it refused to shift out of what felt like 2nd gear (tho I couldn't actually feel it shift from 1st to 2nd - I was doing 40mph at 3,000RPM) I had my favorite light-engine repair shop pull the codes, and it came back:

41: Low Reverse Solenoid Circuit Error
75: High Temp Logic Activated
74: Calculated Oil Temp Use

They don't do transmission work, so I have to wait until next week to bring it to the dealership or some tranmission repair place.

If it sits for several hours until it fully cools off, it will work fine - for a time (a time which seems to be getting shorter and shorter - 10-15 minutes or so). When it runs, it runs fine. Even when it won't shift, everything sounds and feels just fine, except it won't shift to a higher gear.

Does this sound like a faulty solenoid, or might there be some other underlying cause? It has 142,000 miles on the transmission, and I've had the fluid flushed (not just drained) and filter replaced three times during it's life.

Just hoping to get some clue as to what to expect.
Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide.

Default RE: 1998 Caravan Transmission Solenoid problem

2nd gear is the "limp-in" mode when the transmission computer senses a fault. The Solenoid code could mean the solenoid pack is failing on the 1st/reverse pressure and needs to be replaced. The pack is one 10mm bolt and a harness and sits right on the fron of the tranny. Rockauto.com sells the pack for $110. It might not hurt to have a reputable tranny shop scan the TCM for any additional codes and info. Good Luck
