Default 2000 2.4L hydraulic lash adjusters (lifters)

On my 2000 Dodge Caravan 2.4L DOHC I am having the head resurfaced due to warpage.

The machine shop said I should use a vise to press out the old oil (it was mixed with water due to head gasket failure) from the hydraulic lash adjusters, so I did that.

My Haynes manual says the hydraulic lash adjusters must be partially full of engine oil before re-install. They say to place the HLA in clean engine oil and pump it until it fills up. I did this, but they will not fill.

How do I get the hydraulic lash adjusters re-primed with engine oil? They were fine before the valve job and seem to operate smoothly now too, I just can't get them full of oil.

I would not be concerned except the service manual says they should be filled prior to install.
