The reservoir that is mounted on the pump housing not the reservoir where you add fluid. There are 2 reservoirs and any of the ones I've seen have been metal. 3.0l's very well might be plastic, but the 3.3 and 3.8 have metalonesat least through 2000(can't speak for the new junk)

So what is so suspicious? You noticed a leak, you took it to a mechanic and asked him to find the leak, he found the leak and told you how much to replace the leaking part. The pump doesn't have to fail for it to be leaking, you said yourself the leak is new, so why would it have to mean that there would be any noise or stiff steering? I don't there is any need for suspicion. Maybe if you took it in for something unrelated and he just said oh hey your power steering pump has to be changed, then maybe be suspicious, but that isn't the case, you asked him to find the leak and he did.
