Default 04 Caravan chrome rims cause tire ripping

Hi,I am a newbie.
Just had to purchase a new front tire as mine was torn to shreds by the deteroriation of my chrome rims. The mechanic told me that this will be a recurring problem. I am concerned for my family's safety as we use the 401 frequently. Any suggestions?

I don't understand how the rim could cause the tire to shred.
Is the rim damaged around the bead area?

The coating is worn off the rim leaving jagged edges that cut into the tire.
My mechanic said this is a problem with these rims but they are not on recall. He grinded them down and put a rubber coating on but said the heat and friction will cause them to be the same again soon.

I guess you could replace the rims with steel wheels or maybe get the original ones refinished.
Can't say I've ever heard of this type of problem before.

The chrome finishes usually just flake off, I'm not sure how it could be cutting into the tire unless the rim itself has some kind of damage, like a curb hit and it's cutting into the tire.

Are you able to get a picture?

I've had problems with corrosion in chrome wheels such that they don't seal well, but I've never heard of this. The chrome plating is fairly thin - I'm not sure how the chrome flaking off could damage the tire ...

You can file a complaint with the http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ or you could call Chrysler's consumer relations dept. Be prepared to give details about the problem.
