Default 2003 Grand Caravan rack and pinion removal issues

I am in the process of replacing my rack and pinion unit. The issue I am having is removing the steering fluid lines that attach to the unit. According to the Hayes manual these can be reached after removing the intermediate link cover and disengaging the link, right through the opening. I must be missing something. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
