Default click in steering wheel at idle

2000 Grand Caravan 3.3L 235,000 kms . Stationary van, engine off or on, slight pressure on steering wheel (i'm talking 1 inch of movement) either way causes click which can be felt in the wheel as well as when pinching intermediate shaft under dash. havent checked pinch bolt at steering rack yet but dont believe its involved - seems like something in the steering column.

in Haynes manual it mentions a steering damper which looks to be a funny shaped plate under the airbag. what does this do and does this part wear? or perhaps i should just try tightening up the hold-down bolt?
many thanks,
Wayne in Calgary

Default figured it out

took the two shrounds off under the steering wheel and observed the u-joint and pinch bolt directly below the u joint. there was slop at the pinch bolt so tightened the 13 mm bolt another half turn and solved it.
