Default '03 4cyl 2.4L timing belt let go :( Question.

The timing belt let go on my kids 4cyl Caravan. Is this motor an "Interferance" type? IOW do the valves get crashed. Other damages?

Should a head rebuild run $2200-2500 or 1200-1600?

What does a whole motor rebuild run where you are? Installed?

Thanks for your combined Caravanic wisdom.

ok the 2.4 is freewheeling which means there is provisions for valve to piston clearance, However Valve to Valve interference can occur if cams are rotated independently. bad day for valves
no other damage internaly
were you booting it? just driving along? or did it break at idle?

myself id gamble and see if it warrants a teardown first
slap a new belt on it and see if theres cylinder pressure

im assuming you dont get dirty? or know someone who does?
at those prices I could get a whole motor&trans, and a new set of tires.
Heck you could probably buy a van with a good motor
not that the 2.4 isnt good just yours might not be

Welcome to DF
Don't worry about hemi4spd, He didn't toss any parts today. But he is right, we do need some more information. Where did it break,At what speed or where you idling? I also agree with hemi4spd, to throw a new belt on and see how it runs.

Ok, it's my son in-law, and he was driving like 30-40 and it just threw on the engine light and shut off like turning a key, (no bang or noise) he coasted to the side and towed it to the shop.

Later today I got word they planned to throw on a belt in the morning examine pulleys and try it out.

PS thanks for the excellent info guys.

Sorry to hijack thread , but just picked up a 1999 caravan with 2.5 has 185k on odo. What is the recommended replacement time on the timing belt?

1999 ns minivan didn't have a 2.5 engine, It maybe either the 2.4 or the 3.0 engine. Also did you ask when the timing belt was replaced? If you don't know now would be the time like BobGlide had said.

You're right! I was thinking of an all expenses paid trip to Dubai.

Man, I'm gonna miss her.
