Default Intermitent Speedometer and Shifting Problems

First time here! Most interesting forum..... I have a 93 Dodge Caravan 3.3 Litre V6 with more than 323,000 kms on it.Runs fine and has never left me on the road. Recently I noticed the transmission would not shift up and remains in the low range at times. Now I see that my speedometer is not working when this happens. This appears to be an intermittent on part of the speedometer. If my speedo works so does the transmission. Today all was fine as I was driving along at about 50 Kms...... suddenly there is a jolt as the transmission shifts into low, I glance at my speedo and it reads zero.
I suspect that there may be a speed sensor problem or perhaps speedometer cable that is slipping somehow. Any ideas what is causing this situation.??? I would appreciate having some info before taking it to the dealer or repair garage. Thanks

It sounds like an output speed sensor. When your transmission does not see any output speed it doesn't know how to shift or when to shift, so it locks down into low gear (limp-in mode). This is a fairly common problem and parts should be easy to find.

Hi All,
Back again....... Checked with 3 repair shops as to getting the Speed sensor replaced. The first one could not give me a price over the phone and ask that I bring in the vehicle....... second shop same thing..... third shop.. The person I spoke to said "Sounds like output speed sensor needs replacing, if that is it, it will cost total of $93 ". Went to the third shop , the guy connected his computer and said output sensor needs replacing. I asked when he could take the vehicle in for the repair. He said "leave it here, come back in an hour" I did so, came back in an hour and everything is working as it should be..... Thanks again for the information, appreciate it as it allowed me to pick the right shop....... Cheers from Canada
