This cooling fan prob is driving me nuts!
Ok, my fans seem to want to kick on when they want to, I replaced the relay a few weeks ago and the fan came on for like 30 seconds, then shut off again. So I figured theres a short somewhere and it blew out the relay, well tonight when I opened the hood to look at something the fans kicked on! so I drive home and the fans dont work again and the van starts overheating again!
Does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, I replaced the fan with one from the junkyard and still the same problem! I had to splice the wires together because the fan came from a different caravan and the connector wasnt the same. Any way, could a faulty temp sending unit cause the fan to turn on when it chooses or would it make the fan not turn at all?

I'm sure it's not the fan, but the connector to the fan. Try soldering it bypassing the connector. If it was the temp sending unit your gauge would go nuts. Did you already replace the thermostat? That stuck closed would also cause it to overheat and the fans would never kick on because that hot collant doesn't get to the rad

run 'em to a switch into the cabin....J/K
try jumping the fan to see if it comes on. You've already got a good thermostat and there's no connector. Try seeing if the fan could potentially be the problem. Than make sure you didn't install the thermostat backwards. after this I would guess either a relay or bad wire.

Replace the coolant temp sensor. This is what controls (tells) the fan when to turn on and off. The sensor should be near the T- stat housing (possibly mounted/screwed) into the housing. On my wifes 90 Grand, the fan will not shut off until the I switch off the engine. Also throwing a cOde reading "COOLANT TEMP SENSOR VOLTAGE TOO HIGH/LOW".
