i have a '98 caravan that is having some problems. 1st the service engine soon light is on, 2nd where it tells you which gear you are in all the boxes are litup, 3rd the speedometer does not work and last the trans wont shift out of first.

The van is used as a taxi so there are about 200000kms on it. If any one has any ideas or has had this problem PLEASE HELP!!!

Sounds like tranny limp mode again. If you have the feeling of only 1st or 2nd gear (its actually 2nd gear) and MIL light is on, you're likely in Limp mode. Check the fluid. Pull ground on battery for 30 seconds and put back on to reset codes in computer and see if it resets the code again. Good luck

Everyone just replaces the speed sensor and no one questions why an optical (no moving parts (magentic)) sensor goes bad with such frequency. The metal that ^*%! (fouls) them up does come from somewhere and last I checked lots of metal in a tranny wasn't necessarily good. But you're right clean up (or replace) the output speed sensor and it will probably work fine for a while. I've had mine out 4X replacement A604 from Chrysler tranny.
