Default 1998 Dodge Caravan 3.0L V6 wont start

My wife was driving our van the other day when it justdied and would not start back up. So I borrowed my friends DRB II scan tool and it came back with error code P0340 for that code the haynes manual stats that the code means No Cam Signal at PCM which means No camshaft signal detected during engine cranking. Now I was told the camshaft sensor was bad and I had to replace the whole distributor since the sensor was built in and that is what I did and the van still will not start. So I am now confused since that was the only problem with it. What else could be wrong or do I need to get the scan tool back to reset the computer in van so it will start?

Will it turn over at all? Or just nothing? Seems to me I had a camshaft related code when my timing belt broke. Have you checked that? It broke while I was cruising down the highway.

If the cam isn't rotating (ie timing belt broken) the sensor can't get a reading and like greaseangel said this might explain the problem. Make sure you clear the codes before starting it up again.

Have you ruled out the timing belt?

Along with greaseangel and I guess to be more specific, the motor might crank over as, in the crankshaft turns, but the pulley on that that has the timing belt and turns the cam might be broken. There is a cover that has a bunch of I believe 10mm bolts on the pulley side of the motor at the top that covers the belt. You might be able to remove enough of the bolts to see the situation of the beltunder that. In the past that cover was a blackish hard plastic that curved at the top of the motor over the cam pulley. (Can anyone else confirm that for him?) And to go back to your first message no cam signal, does not necessarily mean bad sensor. Could be bad wire or not picking up a reference from the rotating object it senses(the cam which is turned by the timing belt)
