Cool 1950 Dodge Wayfarer parking brake

I have a 1950 Dodge Wayfarer without parking brake. Its because the insurance guy who test drove it didnt release the parking brake. What can have gone wrong and what will i need of new parts?.The brake worked just fine before.
I didnt have the chance looking at it before i parked it in winter storage so i thought i will buy some parts so i can fix it fast when i collect the car in a couple of months .
(this is a fluid drive with the parking brake working on the drive shaft and its the only way for the car to stand still while parked)
Best regards Ståle

Hey Mr. U,
You mean the Parking Brake doesn't function?

He drove around with the parking brake set.

Sounds like he burned up the Shoes.

I'm not familiar with the mechanism, but check the "Shoes" that provide the friction. They are probably "toasted". Replacing them would most likely restore the braking function.

I'll do some research and see if I can find what the mechanism is. Will get back to you.

Hey Mr. U,
Check with this guy:

He seems to have a handle on the problem you described. He has an E-Mail address to contact him.

If the vehicle was drivable AFTER the test drive, then it is doubtful that the guy who drove it with the brake on did much more than either wear or burn up the shoes.

I'm not familiar with this Parking Brake set-up, or its location in the drive line. BUT it most certainly is in place AFTER the Transmission. So what was done would have put some amount of stress on the Fluid Drive, and whatever gears were involved.

IF the Brake is located BEFORE the Front U-Joint (which it seems to me would be the way it would be, as to have it AFTER the Front U-Joint would mean that it would have to ride up and down with the Drive Shaft), then there would have been no stress on U-Joints or Differential Ring and Pinon Gears.

If the problem is that the Brake will just not hold, then most likely it is just the Shoes have been burnt up.

You might try adjusting the unit BEFORE you replace anything. It MAY be that the shoes are just worn from their unfortunate experience and if they can be adjusted to make up for the wear (which is what an adjustment is for) then THAT may solve your problem. The guy who drove it with the Brake on just put many years of wear on it in a short period of time.

Good luck.
