Default CTD 5.9 -vs- 6.7, 3.73 or 4.10 ?

First, I am trading in my PowerWagon for a MORE POWERFUL WAGON!!

Not only do I find myself between model years but with a unique opportunity toselect from trucks with the 5.9 4speed auto or 6.7 6speed auto. I'd like to hear some PRO's and CON's from this forum regarding both engines and auto transmissions.

If someone has a 6.7 with 6speed auto and 4.10 gears I'd like to hear from you regarding empty mileage city/hwy. If you have any tow/haul #'s at hwy speeds with loaded goose or big fat 5ver that would be veryhelpful. Actually if your pulling a 5ver or goose down the hwy with 3.73 gears I'd like to hear form you too.
Any Gear Hunting going on with the new 6 speed??

Cheers!!

I'll put it to you like this. . .unless your pulling heavy (over 18K) 3.73's is all you will need heck I know some guys that push the 24K envelope on 3.73's and still run hard. I can only speak of the 5.9 here since that is what I have. and unfortunately I have 4.10's with a stick. my empty mileage isnt all that bad. I can top her out at a bit over 19mpg, but usualy average high 17's to low 18's.

personaly, if you can get a 5.9 go for it. you dont have the emissions crap to put up with. however one nice thing about the 6.7 is you have a built in exhaust brake.

in terms of mileage pulling, it depends on the load. some get 10-12 while others get 12-14. those pulling heavy usualy manage 10.

last time I pulled a trailer I was probably under 5000. I only knew the trailer was behind me when I looked in the mirrors.

I love my truck 5.9 373's and I have not had the opportunity to tow, only pull people out rivers and sand.

5.9 w/ 3.73's and 6 speed manual, live in a hilly area and have no problem pulling the skid loader around. I still pull out in 2nd when hooked up.

Ihave the 5.9 with 4.10's and the 6 speed manual. I tow about once a month, but last fall i towed 2 jeeps on a 35' gooseneck for about 3 hrs in each direction. That was about 13k and i drove it very hard and got about 10mpg. As anyone else can tell you on here - 13k for these trucks is just stretching it's legs a little.

I agree abput the 3.73's. My Dealer does not even order any Rams with the 4.10's. Said not needed for most applications due to the pulling power of these.

I specifiacally went for a 5.9 with the 3.73's and love it.

To much speculation with the low sulfer diesel right now for me to get a 6.7.

Default RE: CTD 5.9 -vs- 6.7, 3.73 or 4.10 ?

I had a 5.9L w/4.10 gears and was getting a combined average of 17 MPG.

I don't tow much so when I started looking for my new truck, I specifically did NOT want the 4.10 gears. Go with 3.73 for either engine.

Having had the 5.9L w/4-speed auto and now the 6.7L w/6-speed, I prefer the 6.7L. I don't intend to mod the exhaust, so the environmental devices don't bother me and ULSD is easy to find. The engine in stock form is quiet, smooth, and powerful. The 6-speed doesn't jerk into the top gear and I have had no problem with "gear searching". The auto shifter and engine brake are nice as well.

i got the 5.9 auto with the 4.10... i do not pull anything as of now and i get 12.5 mpg city driving with 17300 miles on[:@]. i know shes got alot of power to pull and one day im going to need it but i was not even looking for the 4.10. i wasnt looking for a silver truck with black interior, i hate leather and i got leather, and i was looking for a truck with a sliding rear window and i dident get that. i was only looking for a long box 4x4 white on tan but once i got in the truck (being the first diesel i test drove) i said ILL TAKE IT! good luck with your choice and welcome!
