Drew/Steve... I've got 242k on mine. I'm presently running AMSOIL 15W-40, but for the majority of it's life it's had dino oil or synthetic blend. Do you think it's worth the time and expense to add a bypass filtration system? If it'll help me see 500k or beyond, it's worth it to me. I'm just wondering if it's a moot point, given the mileage already on this engine. She runs beautifully, though.

the bypass filters main use is to help extend the life of the oil by filtering to a smaller particle size. it wont necessarily extend the life of the engine.

Makes sense. I take it from your previous comments that the return line to the top of the engine provides the added benefit of getting oil circulating up in the valve region quicker on cold startup, too?
Sounds like it would still be a good investment then.

that it does. . .you have fresh oil being dumped directly onto the head and valves as soon as the engine starts.
I do have a tick, and I know I need to lash my valves, however after just a few seconds that tick lessens from the oil.

the bypass is usualy changed every other filter change.

changing mine this weekend for the 1st time. still flowing good, about 40k miles on it. Amsoil claims 60~70 IIRC...
To the poster who is considering one at 200k miles... I'd do it. some of the research I did indicated that the particles greater than the 2 micron were a contributor to the wear in a motor... take those out with the bypass and you should slow down the wear from that point forward. I did oil analysis and it did not go as long as advertised... was ok at 7k but not at 15k so I flushed the motor with dino oil and did another analysis after 2500 on the dino (mobil delvac) and it was all good. approaching 5k on the oil that is in there and this weekend, all the filters (oil & gas) get swapped out.
