I have a 2004.5 dodge ram 2500 cummins 5.9 4X4. In the morning it idles rougher than **** on a stick. (its -5 to -10 celcius mornings now). It surges and sounds like it is going to die. but anywys besides Powerstroke guys laughing at me in the morning I noticed something else today. It idled up from about 700-750 (normal) to about 1000 rpm automatically. I wasnt even in cab. I like that because I wanted to bump the idle up to 1000. Can it be done manually or is it automatically or is my truck just hooped?

RE: Does a 3rd gen 5.9 cummins idle up automatically?
I don't have an idle problem at start up and I don't know if it has anything to do with the climate ( I'm in the deep south ), or the fact that I use an additive. ( Stanadyne )
RE: Does a 3rd gen 5.9 cummins idle up automatically?
it is normal. . .when outside temps are below 50F and the truck has sat at idle for a certian time it will automaticaly idle up to ensure proper combustion. . .
perfectly normal.

RE: Does a 3rd gen 5.9 cummins idle up automatically?
Working in the far north we've seen (in past winters) temps of -40F for a week straight!! Even with the truck "plugged in" she still runs rough. I usually let her idle for about 5mins then kick up the high idle feature to about 1200rpm for a few minutes more, she smooths out and I usuallydrive off slow to warm up trany and pumpkins! Let the ferd guys laugh... have ya ever listen to a ferd rattle when its cold? They sound like they're about to fall apart!! They have the most disconcerting rattling and knocking I've ever heard... I tend to keep my distance from em, for fear something may come flying out from under the hood and hit me! [:@]
RE: Does a 3rd gen 5.9 cummins idle up automatically?
Its real fun... when yer truck has been sitting for 8 to 12 hrs in -40F the tires get real hard!! You can drive several miles before the "flat" spot starts to get round again... thump!!.... roll.... thump..... roll..... thump....times four tires.. [:'(]
RE: Does a 3rd gen 5.9 cummins idle up automatically?
yep sounds like fairbanks alaska except there has been time where its -60 for a week that was when i had my ford it either woldent start or it would take 3 hrstoo get it to start even then it ran like it was gonna fall apart the dodge has seen -50 for a couple days and it fires right up and both of them had about every type of heater that you can put on a truck oil heater, block heater, trans heaterand interor heater. the ford had 2 block heaters and still woldent start thats why i dont drive that pos anymore
