Default Cummins 5.9L vs 6.7L

I'm considering buying an 08 Mega Cab, 4x4, w/ 6.7L Cummins. The only guy I know that owns a Cummins has 2 3500 quad cabs w/ 5.9L. He says to stay away from the 6.7L because it has lots of problems. I'm wondering what others thing of the 6.7L. I'd be using for pulling my tractors and RV around not for real work. Does/Will it have the duribility of the 5.9L.

so far its like your buddy told you lots of problems. the dpf clogs up the turbos soot up constant cel's being thrown. If I were you I would look for a good used 06-early 07 with the 5.9. There are lots of them out there right now they aren't hard to find.

There is talk of a recall on the 6.7L and they replace the turbo all the way back to the muffler (turbo, cats, DPFs, etc.)

Overall, the 5.9L is more reliable right now. The 6.7L's are having some problems. Not everyone has problems but it is something I see almost every day. I know some people with 6.7Ls who have never had a problem...

ok heres the deal i have a 2008 6.7 cummins these are the problems i have had crank sensor went out and a light bulb blew i currently have 25000 miles on this truck i have gone through one set of tires already i pull 27,500 with almost all of the time up and down mountains level and every where else acording to my mpg im getting around 16.2 empty and when i put my 25 ft goose neck behind i drop to about 10.5 which is climbing all the time with the more miles on the truck i love the exhaust brake from factory my brakes would be shot with out it i have plenty of power pulling hills in 6th gear every once in awhile i have to shift down but not to much you will find if you get an 6.7 your mileage actually increases at higher rpms such as 2400 in 6th gear then you would at 2000 in 6th gear i love this truck i wouldnt trade it for the world i still have my 5.9 but it is no longer legal for the streets pulling sled only hahahhahahahahahaha im about to put and edge chip in my 6.7 this weekend ill let you know how it does oh and to let you kknow my dpf has never pluged up once and i havent had any problems with the turbo or anything else yet i have friends that have had problems youll know with in the first 1500 miles if you will have problems with yours or not!!!!!!!

you probably haven't had problems with the dpf clogging up because you are using the truck for what it was designed for.

too many people dont load down their trucks which I think is adding to the problems. Lately the most I've hauled with mine is the lawm mower... and no it's not a riding one either... push mower

with the 5.9... never have had 1 issue with it, 99k on the clock.
