I'm pretty sure a 2002 did come with a catalytic converter, if so yeah I would take it off.

Take it off but hang on to it. just in case your state has emissions testing. Also welcome to the forum.

welcome to DF first off. take it off if you want to but hold onto it incase your state has testing or is going to have testing in the future. Some states will check it when you get a safety sticker. (if your state has that) I don't have one but i keep the factory exhaust in case I need to reinstall it.

94-98 12 valves had cats, 24 valves had resonators.

Yeah, you shouldn't have a cat on that truck unless it's a Cali model.

I have heard of them doing that here in IL also. What the look for is people rolling coal. then they will pull you over and check to see if you have anything their. So leaving it on their gutted out wouldn't be that bad of a idea.
