Greetings all,
I have an old 1999 SLT with 120,000 that I put in a NV5600 6 speed WAY long ago, and the dreaded "53" block that cracked about 5 years ago. Got the leak down to where I only have to add water once a day. It's all bumped up and makes about 300/700 at the rear wheels. Been a great truck, but it's time to move on...
I just joined the forum, needing answers to some questions. Did some searches but still have questions...
I was disappointed to find the 2014's use DEF. How big a deal has it been for use guys? Expensive? ANY benefits at all??
Are you happy with the newer post 2012 models?
Now I know they all use DEF, I wonder if I should wait for a 2015?

Actually, in the beginning I tried everything BUT the stitch because of the cost and the poor reputation for success. It's like a $1000 bet with short odds that it will work for the long haul. So...no stitch. The best way is to bite it and put in a new block which really means a new motor. A BIG investment in a 15 year old truck that just isn't worth it.
So...new truck time. We're ready anyway. I just hope the block in the 2014 isn't cast in Brazil with a big "53" on the side of it...LOL

I completely understand. I had a quick visit to our Dodge dealer in our nearest town and discussed the 2014 Ram 1500 diesel option offered. Depending on your towing needs, the long euro experience with diesel might be something to consider (I'm doing the same), with my towing capacity estimated at 7,500 pounds including trailer, something I think the 1500 diesel could handle for less sticker price. But for now, the old 99 CTD is the trick.
I hope others with new diesels (DEF) chime in for your post for the 2500 & 3500 new Dodge diesels. K.

I would go with 2012 or earlier... DEF systems have been having issues and DEF must be stored at room temp which means cold winters and hot summers will cause problems with that system... in theory it works well to do what they want it to do (clean your emissions to near zero) but in actual practice the fluid is too temperature sensitive to not have issues...
