Default RE: 2005 3500 4x4 Front Wheel Bearing Repacking

4) Center punch axle nut and axle for tensioning orientation for reassembly.

5) Remove axle nut and washer.

6) Remove the four 14mm hub assembly bolts from in behind hub around the front axle U-joints. Note I used air impact wrench and still had to heat them with oxy/acet. to break them free. If heat is going to be used remove the anti-lock brake sensor on top of the hub, I almost burnt mine off.

7) Remove the front hub assembly using a three jaw puller.

8) I purchased five 14mm x 70mm bolts to use as jacking bolts, ensure that they are threaded the entire length of the bolt. Use the four threaded holes in the hub as jacking points to separate the bearing from the hub, see picture.
9) Clean and repack the bearing with good quality wheel bearing greese
10) Assemble hub and align in hydraulic press

11) Carefully press bearing back onto hub, ensuring that the hub spins freely, you can press the bearing in too tight. I had to use the jacking bolts to back the bearing out abit the first time, as my hub would not spin freely.
12) Clean all mating surfaces of hub assembly with wire brush and then apply anti-sieze compound to aid in disassembly later on.

Default RE: 2005 3500 4x4 Front Wheel Bearing Repacking

Did not quit get to finish last night, I lost hydro for 16 hrs last night.

I made up a tool just incase the outer part of the hub separated from the inner part of the hub. The half inch plate would slide over the axle shaft and but up against the axle nut and washer. You would then thread the four 14mm bolts into the front side of the hub assembly, this would do exactly what the puller accomplishes with more control. The perimeter holes are drilled 5/8" spaces 3 7/8" apart from each other. The center hole is drilled 1 1/4" to accomadate the front axle shaft. If anyone has any questions fire away.

Default RE: 2005 3500 4x4 Front Wheel Bearing Repacking

After talking to a local logging company about ball joints on these trucks they told me of another trick that they had learned. If you remove the anti-lock brake sensor on the front wheels you can pump wheel bearing grease into the opening and then use low pressure compressed air to force the grease into the wheel bearings. I had notice this when I had repacked the front wheel bearings and have been thinking about it. This sensor opening is in between the two front wheel bearings.
