OK, I think i'm done... feel free to make any comments... I generally dont like doing a DIY writeup in a thread, its easier to do it in word and submit to Patrick (which I still may do).
OK here it is... I got the Amsoil p/nBMK-11 oil bypass kit with the Amsoil p/n BK-1301 oil return line cap to ease installation.
Cost was about $230. the added hardware came to about $60 bux.
using the template provided (I copied mine to preserve the install instructions) mark the locations of the holes and drill small pilot holes. Once the pilot holes are drilled, use either a very sharpe drill bit or use 2 more steps to get you to the size you need. I ended up going all the way thru the frame and had to find longer bolts. I had to make sure I cleared the tranny cross-member which is welded to the frame so when you pic your spot, look behind it. You will need a right angle drill to get in there.
Note: these images are of the 1st location I picked... I ultimately went horozontal since I dont want the filter hanging below the frame rail.
Once the holes are drilled mount the hose fittings into the filter housing and install on the frame.
Now build your hoses... use loctite provided in the kit as directed. Since I used stainless steel and it has been a while since i've used it, I forgot that it is a conductor and will short your battery out very nicely. Yup, you guessed it, line over terminals... sparks, heat and a quick jolt for Mr Steve and a nice burn to remind me... So cover your passenger side battery...
When assembling the hoses, the fittings that came with the kit have a piece that threads onto the hose, note that the threads are reverse threads and you need to screw them on counter clockwise.
Assemble the cap & fittings so that your return line can be attached to the return line cap and attached the return line to the cap. Make sure you use the supplied loctite during assmbly of the cap fittings. Loctite on the hose end fittings may not be necessay and I didnt use any.
I wanted my line to come straight back to the firewall so I looselytie-wrapped it to the main wiring harness. I needed 7' of the braided line to reach the filter. it also gave me enough length to route it so it's out of harms way.
Next remove one of the oil ports off of the engine oil filter assmebly and install your fitting. Use the supplied locktite on all of the fittings during the install process. here is a pic of one of the options... a right angle fitting which I decided not to go with.
Screw on the oil bypass filter and make sure to lube the seal so it does not leak.
Verify all connections are tight and ready to go.
Do not install the cap assembly at this time, put a container under it to catch the oil as itcomes out of the bypass filter for the 1st time. The reason is to flush the lines prior to connecting it to the motor.
Fire up the motor and watch for the oil to come out of the return line. once it does shut it down and install the cap.
Fire it back up and look for any leaks, repair as needed. Your all done!
here's a pic of the oil as it came out of the bypass filter for the 1st time... coal black. this oil has less than 200 miles on it, it turned black almost right after the oil change. I will keep you guys posted on the oil cleansing process...
1) find your filter mounting location
2) using the template, mark & drill your mounting holes
3) attached the bypass filter input & output ports using the supplied loctite.
4) cut hoses to length and assemble each end with supplied hardware.
Note: the hose end hardware has left handed threads and screws onto the hose. then you install the barb into that fitting.
5) Mount the filter onto the frame (or where-ever you decide to mount it).
6) Build up your return line cap but do not install
7) Attached hose from bypass filter out port to return line cap.
8) attached hose from bypass filter in port to oil filter housing output port (feeds the bypass filter)
9) verify all connections are secure
10) install bypass filter
11) place return line cap over catch container to allow flushing of the system
12) fire it up and wait for oil to come out of the return line into the container then shut it down
13) add a quart of oil (or top it off)
14) clean the cap and install onto the motor.
15) fire it back up and check for leaks.
