Just a shot in the dark here. Im guessing you live in a colder climate, and are having these issues after the D has sat for an extended time.
When you start your D it will raise the RPM 400-500 at idle until the motor begins to warm up. This could account for the "louder than usual."
Also while your engine and Trans are cold they do not perform as effecient. As the D warms up, it should return to normal Loudness and power.
You want to take it easy, with no fast take offs or flooring the right pedal until the engine and trans have warmed up.

I have the same problem, 3.6L and i'm wondering just like you are if this is normal. IMO it's not...
