Default AC condenser broken - Compressor at risk?

Hi,

Something hit the AC condensor and pierced a hole, all freon is gone...
My mechanic does not work on AC but he told me I should have this fixed ASAP otherwise the compressor will jam...

Is this true ? How long do you think I can wait ? I don't have 500-600$ right now to fix this and winter is here so I don't care about AC, but if I wait until spring and need to replace the compressor I'll be screwed...

Don't forget that the AC components are also used in the defrost cycle so winter or summer they function.

If all the refrigerant leaked out, all the compressor oil leaked out as well, so you will be running the compressor without oil. Yes, you will destroy it. Unplug the compressor until you can afford to fix it properly or it will end up costing twice as much.

Thanks for your input.

My dodge dealer estimated total repair cost between 800 and 1000 $. This is crazy.
My mechanic said even unplugged, the compressor can jam...

1000$ for something I use like 20-30 days per year? Crazy.

Your in Montreal do you not use defrost cycle??
Defrost requires the compressor to be operational and you need that I am sure.

You do realize the compressor runs in defrost mode, right?

No one said anything about a back window. When you defrost or defog the front windows the compressor runs, Yes, fix it.
