Maybe it wears the more times you use it thus less grinding???

My '97 grinded like crazy, had to shut it down. My '03 has the electronic shifter, I don't have to shut if off anymore, just have to make sure tranny is in neutral and the clutch is in when I shift to 4 low

It's the act of getting the gears closer to the same speed. kind of like shifting a tranny that has bad syncros...

master baiter, do you have the shifter on the floor or are you on of those push button 4x4 people. I believe in 06 they offer both. The only time I had mine grind was when I was on Ice and didn't fully apply the brake while in 4 high and there was a tire spinning when jammed into 4 low. Like mentioned above make sure that you are in neutral with engine at idle and you should be fine.

I'm assuming that everyone here has manual transmissons. As with my auto, shifting from 2Hi to 4 Hi, just roll slowly in driveand turn the dial. I'm not sure what the maximun speed at which this can be accomplished, perhaps as much as 55 mph.

To shift into 4Low from there, I shift the transmisson into nutreal while still rolling at just under 5 mph and turn the dial again into 4Low. There is usually a slight " clunck ", but I remember reading in the manual that it's normal to hear that.

I never really use the 4WD that often, but on occasion, shift into the gears just to lubricate the seals and work the transfer case.

I think those of us who grind have the automatic trans and the floor mounted manual transfer case shifter. Never had a truck grind going into 4 low with a manual tranny.

Yeah, sorry bout that I should have clarified. It's an auto tranny with a manual transfer case (on the floor, not electronic or vacuum). My ford had an electronicknob you turn, which made it nice, no noises, but it had to be working in order to go into 4 wd!
