Hi new to this site have a question;
I have a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 24V with auto, and am getting a code of P1689 and only that code. The truck will shut down going down the road, or sometimes the code will appear before I start the truck. Took the truck in and had a new VP44 and tranfer pump put in drove down the road a few miles and it did the same thing, took it back so they said it was the APPS so had a new one of those put on. No luck still getting the 1689 code.
What to do?? Tired of throwing money at the truck.

 

Could it be a camshaft position sensor? or crankshaft position sensor? If this mill has these sensors, I would look at those. But I haven't work on one of these before so I am not sure about it. Check for any loose, worn connections or corroded connections.

I dont know what code P1689 exactly is but I do know it is a Specific Chrysler/Dodge code.

 

P-1689 no communication between ecm & injection
pump module (obd ii)

possible causes
fuel inj pump gnd ckt open or high resistance
fuel pump ctrl mod harness observable defect
datalink (+) circuit open
datalink (+) circuit short to ground
datalink (-) circuit open
datalink (-) circuit short to ground
engine control module defective

 

Thank you for info, now thats helpful. do you recomend checking for these posible causes for myself, if so, is there a wiring digram available, or do I have to go to shop to see a tech.

 

I would start with disconnecting the batteries and then clean battery post, then move on to the cables. Clean the cables well bothe ends clean the area where the negatives contact the "grounding" area. After cleaning the battery posts, cables and contact areas spray on some terminal coating.
try this see if this makes a difference, been a number of guys having like issues and had the problems go away after cleaning up the connections.

 

I will try that also, but I do clean my batt. conections once a year and use terminal coating so that I would never have a starting problem.

 

follow the "ground" cables to where they terminate clean those areas as well, also check all gorunds to ie: fenders make sure area are clean and the grounds are tight.

Why couldn't the shop have done that first, instead of taking all my money?

 

OK> cleaned the negetive battery conection at the front of the block, also the one on the pass. side of block, cleaned both batt. terminals and all neg. conections to fenders and under hood area I could find. Also this is somthing that HELLACIOUSHEMI had sugested so thanks to all for the info.
Will see if it works...

 

Keep us updated what you find. Mine is doing the same thing. I called bluechip the other day, he told me the electronics on the vp44 were going bad. I just need to come up with the extra$$$ to see if he was right
