Question Source for computer, 97/98 2500 Diesel

Hey, I'm trying to help a buddy. His 97/98 (he wasn't sure) 2500 with the Cummings diesel is having shifting problems. It won't shift up past 2nd if I understood him right.
The shop he took it to (that he trusts) says that his computer is bad. The only one they can find is used, not refurbished, and the owner's think it's made of gold.
Did Dodge just use one computer or two for the 3/4 ton diesel's in 97/98?
Any source for a new one?
Are there after market units that are good?
My buddy's not after extra power or anything, just wants his truck to work the way it always has.

Thanks in advance.

(Yes my truck is a 2008 half ton, but this question isn't about it...)

you have the worst years possible here lol... 97 and 98 are different, and in 98 there are two different ones also, need to know the exact year and if 12v or 24v, it could be but its highly unlikely its a computer issue, have the solinoids in the trans been changed/checked?
