Default 2006 Ram 3500 transmission problems..HELP!

I just bought this truck, and I don't know too much about it. I'm having two issues with it:
1. When the trucks in drive, and I take off, let's say from a stoplight, it stays in first without shifting to second until I let off the gas.
2. The RPM gauge is all over the place. When idling it is at 0, when driving it bounces from 0 to 4300. It doesn't do this consistently, at times it does work. And it isn't doing this because of the tranny, it just seems to have a mind of it's own!
I'd appreciate any help, or ideas on what you think may be causing these issues. Thanks

Replace the gov. press. solenoid and transducer in the trans. If that doesn't help then the input shaft seals are leaking and need to be replaced. As for the tach, you can run a self test, Key off hold trip button and turn key on without letting trip button go (let trip button go after all lights light up), all the lights will light up and and guages will move. If the tach movement doesn't match the speedo then you will need a new cluster
