Default difference between 2nd and 3rd generation

Is there a difference between the 2nd generation diesel 1995-2002 and the 3rd genernation deisel 2003 to present, other than body style? Looking at going to a diesel. Just was wondering if there was much of a difference in the model year. Will mostly be buying a used truck. Just not sure on the year.
Thanks

Default RE: difference between 2nd and 3rd generation

3rd gens depending on year have more power. instead of the p7100 pump and jerk style injectors of the 2nd gen, the 3rd gens have a fully computer controlled CP3 injector pump and electronicaly fired injectors. 2nd gens have the Dana axels where as the 3rd gens have AAM axels. but other than that nothing much has changed mechanicaly.
