Default oil change interval!!!

Ok im confused ,there are people changing oil at 5000miles and then there are pople changing oil at 3750 miles because 5000 seems to long??? If im right the regular schedule for oil change is 15000miles for normal and 7500miles for severe, so what is the benefit of changing oil so early? other than wasting $100 bucks all the time ,worked on diesels in the army and for defense contractor and never under stood this. anyone have a explanation? maybe i have my a@@ up my forth point of contact but hey i need to know?

thanks

First off, an oil change is only $40 if you do it yourself. I can't speak for everyone here, but for those of us who bought an '06 it's possible the truck has been sitting on the lot for about a year. In that case, you'll want to change the oil earlier than scheduled. I've also heard reports of extremely dirty oil at 3500 miles due to engine break in and the age of the oil. It can't hurt, and $40 is a small investment to keep everything running well.

Cummins themselves say you can go a maximum of 15,000 miles on an oil change, provided you use oil that meet specific criteria. If you don't use oil that meet that, they recommend a maximum 7,500 change intervail. Read my post here for more information and links.

Many do use Amsoil and some use some of the other Synthetic oils on the market..

I paid the extra 700 dollars to get oil changes every 3500 miles. About 3 times a month on average for me. So the 700 was a good investment for me. I change mine every 3500 because i already paid for it so i am going to suck the dealer for all there worth.

With todays oils some say 15k is ok. I'm a tech at a dealership for other model vehicles and I got to tell you the oil might be able to hold up (synthetic) but I have had quite a few filters come apart in my hands (cartridge style filters). So the dealership started to pay for a 7,500 mile oil change then the client is responsible for the 15k.
As for myself I change my oil at 5,000 miles (Rotella brand oil) and rotate the tires then next time around I balance and rotate.

Myself, I think I will change the oil in my 06 at 3500. Then every 7500 after that using a good quality 15/40. I am sure I could go every 15K, but after getting hit up for a 5K+ expense for a diesel motor, I would rather be safe than sorry.

I change my oil every 5K. It's just easy for me to remember to change it on the 5's and the 0's. LOL !!

I just got my new drain plug ( again ). Looks like it should fit this time, but since I just did an oil change I've got about another 4K to go before I try it out.

HEY ... was it my imagination or did someone here recomend using grease on the oil filter gasket instead of oil? I remember hearing it somewhere but I can't remember where.
