Default torque specification for alternator pulley

Does anyone know the torque specification for the alternator pulley nut on a 97 dodge van 5.2l 8cyl 1500, or a website, book containing such information?

About 30 to 40 pounds. If you have one use a 3/8 impact wrench on the lowest setting and a good strap wrench or a chain wrench with part of an old belt on the pulley to prevent damage while using the impact gun to tighten the nut down.

I was thinking to leave the belt on pulley while i m removing it with impact wrench. Can I do that?

Could yes, but I personally do not recommend doing so. Most likely the impact gun will completely remove the nut in one short burst and with the belt tensioner the pulley could come off the alternator and either hurt you, damage the radiator or another part.

Getting the nut off of the alternator once it is removed from the vehicle is easier than you may think. If needed you could use channel lock with a piece of rubber type material to hold the pulley as you remove and tighten the nut.

I wouldn't because of the impact stress on the belt and/or the tensioner. There's also an outside chance of damaging the water pump.

I never bother with actually torquing the nut, but then I've got a real good feel for tightness for fasteners even using power tools. When I do a pulley, 99% of the time, I can get it off just holding the pulley with my hand and zipping with my ½" impact. However caution on this because if there's any burs an it spins, ouch on the hand. I usually were Mechanix gloves.
