Im new to Dodge trucks, and not all that familiar with their parts and operation.
I have a 91 B350 that i have some Transmission Concerns. First id like to know the name of it, Like Ford has AOD or 4r70w. what is the transmission name for the dodge 4 speed paired with a 360.

Is this a lock up transmission? If so, when does it go into lockup? i cant feel it.

sometimes on take off, it will shift from 1 to 2, then a 2nd later on to third. not all the time though.

on cold start up, the trans wont warm up with the engine. sometimes it wont go into gear for a few seconds, then will go into gear and work fine. other times it goes into gear, but warms up very slow. takes about a mile for it to shift into 2nd. Once it does that it shifts fine for the rest of the day. Fluid level is at norm and is very pink.

 

You might have a look on the underside of the hood, see if there's a sticker with the equipment info, should list your transmission etc.

not sure if will help but have you tried warming up in neutral for a few seconds before shifting into gear to take off

 

Your trans should be a 3 speed 727 with lockup converter also by the way I don't recall feeling
converter lock up ever on the 727s. Those are one one the strongest transmissions Dodge ever
made.

Now regarding your shifting issues with fluid level at the proper level sounds like you have a
problem. One mile to shift to second is not right cold or not unfortunately I do not consider myself
qualified to diagnose auto trans but this is what comes to mind. The band's have they been
adjusted recently and are you warming the transmission before checking the fluid level?

Also if I recall some trans level is to be checked with the trans in neutral.
I do know a overfilled auto trans will act very strangely before self destructing.

 

its a 91, I do know its a 4 speed . it has overdrive. And a button on the dash to turn off the over drive. fords and gms go into lockup in third, then shift into O/D
I did not check the fluid in neutral, but i saw on the stick that i should. The trans was warm from a drive when i checked it. I will check in neutral later.

the delayed shifting is only on a cold start up. after it shifts the first time, its great for the rest of the day.

 

you should use atf+4 and nothing else in that tranny

 

Well then I stand corrected agian, owned a 89 B350 ( 3 speed 727) one of the best vehicles I have ever owned still kicking myself for selling it. Before I open my mouth in the future I will be sure I know what I'm talking about.

Moving on your best bet is to find the sticker in the engine compartment with equipment codes that will list a few things including the trans type/# and rear end ratio
also If you bring your VIN number to a dealer they can tell you as well.

 

46RH is what is in a 1991 Van with a 360 and a 4 speed.

 

how many miles on that van? when was the last trans fluid change?

 

I also need some guidance on a drain and fill that went terribly wrong….anyone know if there’s supposed to be an o ring or something on the filter to line up correctly? I drained around one gallon and refilled one gallon and the trans barely worked. So I drained again n added a gallon, ran like ****. So I’ve added another .5 quart, and drove it to work. Just added the rest of the quart. Seeing as how it improved every time I added, I’m assuming it was simply low.
-dipstick is useless, just like the gauges. It just picks up so much from the filler tube on both sides because it is damn near 6 ft long. So did I destroy my transmission?

transmission looks to never have been changed, maybe a table spoon of metal flakes and sludge from the magnet and some on the pan, I added a magnet in this spot. I did nothing but remove the filter and clean the edges before putting in the new.
Oh, it’s probably super significant that it started moaning in reverse when it was cold at the start of the day, which prompted me to do the change. That same noise was much more pronounced after the drain n fill of one gallon. I think it has decreased since adding the quart of dex/merc. I’m gonna go take it for a drive n see.

 

I got rid of my Dodge in 2014... keep adding fluid 1/2 qt at a time... poke that dipstick in and study it closely... you will find it make a line at the bottom where you should be reading the level... more fluid then what you need is LESS bad then too little fluid... HOW MANY MILES ON THE VAN? Those trannies were only good for about 150K
