1992 B250 Cargo van, catalytic converter and CA smog test help needed
Bought a used 1992 B250 cargo van in the SF Bay area. I replaced about four sensors having to do with emissions and got the smog test and failed.
Guy says that I have the wrong catalytic converter on it and that at 15mph and 25mph it is putting out roughly 4 times the emissions needed to pass!
A new CA catalytic converter costs about $200 and I'm not sure if the emissions would drop to acceptable levels even with the correct converter.
Does anyone have any experience with catalytic converters and CA smog?
Wondering if I should invest more $$ in it or just sell it for parts.
Thanks

It's not your cat, you have burnt valves. A bad cat will give you high HC reading but it will not give you a high CO reading. The high CO reading is the result of unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust. Also to note is how the CO goes up with the increase in MPH. As engine speed increases the timing advances and the CO should go down, not up. Again this is an indication of even more unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust.
