I did my truck when I got it (high miles @ 121k) and I have no problems. I also did the BMW @ 135K and no problems.

I recommend mobil 1 (I use 15w50).

Steve....is there a reason why you chose 15w50 rather than 10w30 or 10w40.......just curious?

I have used Moble 1, Royal Purple and AMSOIL and did not notice a difference in any of them, though they are all greatly better than reg oil.

I now stay with Moble 1 for the price.

I use Mobil1 on mine, although I did not have alot of miles on it when I changed my oil over to synthetic. I did alot of research on the subject and the only thing that I found is that you should not use synthetic for the break-in. Other than that you should be able to make the switch at any time regardless of the miles that are on the vehicle.

100 degree sacramento summer days, I've tried 5w50 in my Jeep 5.2 & felt like it was not protected well enough... if felt loose and made more noise than with the 15w50. so in my mind that equaled less protection on the cylinder walls & bearing journals so I switched to the 15w50 & haven't used anything else since. I also tried this on the BMW motor & felt the same way with how it ran. A rebuilt BMW motor is $3500... ouch (doesn't include labor), I'll stick with the 15w50 mobil 1 oil. The only drawback is in the winters when i go tothe mtns...takes a little bit to get it warmed up, but for the most part, here in Sacramento, we have very mild winters (30's and never any snow) so it's not a problem

You should have your oil tested and see how your oil is really doing. Feelings and sounds are not an accurate indicator. There are several brands of vehicles that now run 5w-20. The long term oil analysis results have proven that the thinner oil has protected the engines flawlessly. This is contrary to what all the "thicker is better" crowd said would happen. Read some of the oil analysis results at www.bobistheoilguy.com and see for yourself.

I use a synthetic diesel 15w-40 in my 5.9 Ram because it has 137,000 miles on the engine. In my Dakota (67,000 miles), I use a synthetic diesel 5w-30.

i just switched to synthetic for the price difference. $32 for 3000 miles or $50 for 6500 miles. Maybe i am wrong but it makes sense to me, a penny a mile or seven tenths of a penny a mile. Plus it provides better protection.
