Default Help Don't know where to start 97 Stratus 2.4l

Hello everyone:

I have a 1997 Stratus ES 2.4L. Check Engine light on. So I took to AutoZone and had them run the check. It gave me two error codes P0140 and P0141. Eventually leading to the O2 sensor. Sensor 2 Bank 1the same one I replaced not even a year ago.

I will start with P0140:

Definition = HO2S 12 Circuit Condition (heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2)

Explanation = The powertrain control module uses the oxygen sensor to calculate the air/fuel ratio in the exhaust.

Probable Causes =
1. Oxygen Sensor Defective
2. Fuel System runnin very rich or lean-check other codes first.
3. Engine msifire condition-repair.
4. Fuel pressure very high or low-fuel pump or pressure regulator.

Now P0141:

Definition = HO2S 12 Heater Condition (heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2)

Explanation = The powertrain control module monitors the oxygen sensor heater. The conputer has recognized a failure in this circuit.

Probable Causes =
1. Oxygen sensor defective
2. Poor connection at oxygen sensor
3. check circuit fuse.

So if anyone could help that would awesome. Thank you guys for your time.

Thanks in advance,
Tim DeCenso

I totalty forgot to add the symptoms. You start the car it idles really bad. Also and redlights to. You first go and seems like something is holding you back. Then you shut the car off and restart and it is fine for a while.

I would check to see if you have a misfire in the engine. Mine was caused by faulty plug wires. An O2 sensor shouldn't cause that. There might also be a code for this too. If it is idling rough and acceleration is poor, ring out your plug wires and check for opens. When I finally replaced mine, I had only one that was actually conducting as a wire should. Could it be your cat is damaged and is fouling up the sensor?

check the simple things first. when was the last time the car had a tune up? what type of plugs are you running? air filter? one year is pretty fast for an O2 sensor to go out, don't mean it can't happen. try pulling the O2 sensor out and looking at it, may be able to clean it off with a BBQ grill brush if it's gunked up with carbon. check the wires/connectors from the sensor to the computer. let us know what you find.
