Default 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T transmission

I was entering a highway. I probably had the car up to 4200 RPM. The car would stick in one of the gears and would not go into a lower gear until I let off the gas. The car then would stutter. I came up to a stop light and the car was rocking back and forth like it was about to stale. The "Service Engine Soon" light comes on. I pulled to the side of the road and turned off the car and let it sit for a few minutes. I turned the car back on and white smoke came over the back. I have already diagnosed that it is not a blown head gasket. Since then, the car will not go into overdrive. What could it be? Thanks

i'll try but my intake is metal........i don't thinks its the trans is bad though b/c it only happens sometimes. i thought maybe it was a sensor or there is a recall for the cooling unit for the transmission.

i dont see why an engine issue would involve the transmission, but i dont see where youd be getting smoke from unless there was an issue...what has it done the last two days?
