1995 Stratus 2.4l Transmission Problem

I just bought a used "95" Stratus with a 2.4 L engine. I am experiencing a transmissiom problem, where it will not shift out of 2nd gear. When I test drove it, there was no issue. In the manual, it says you reset it everytime you shut it off, then put it back in "drive".It also says do notdrive it, when you have this problem. It happens on and off. I went to a trans. shop and they told me it would cost $450 to give an estimate, of the total job(need to take apart trans.) I know that the transmission shifting is electronic. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what is the problem, how is it fixed, and how much did it cost? Thanks for your time and interest in responding.
