Default P0420 code now

97 Strat 2.0 148k

Replaced O2 sensors almost a year ago because Bank 1 sensor (upstream) was bad. Now a CEL and P0420 scanned. I have read here that it could be another O2 problem but also could be the cat. I would like to know how many of you have run into this code and what ultimately was the fix. I would rather not spend another $50 a piece for O2 sensors if I don't have to. TIA

Default RE: P0420 code now

It's a common code on a lot of cars. It's a catalyst inefficency code, so it's set when the reading between the upstream and downstream sensors don't differentiate enough... typically the sign of a bad cat.

Does anyone have any experience with replacing cats with aftermarket ones like this?

This is from the RockAuto.com website. If I can get a cheap cat and it'll last me a year or two, I'd rather do that as I will likely no longer have the car then. I just need something to get me through CT emissions testing.
