98 stratus transmission exploded

ok so i was driving down the rode and all of a suden i feel a hard shift and hear a clanking i look behind me and see a plume of somke, i imedietly stopped and looked under my car and trans fluid is poring out of the seal (not the pan) by the starter, i dont know what happend can any one help me and explain to me what happend please
