Default Replacing a bushing on a 2004 Dodge Stratus R/T?

I hit a really nasty pothole in May of 2008, and since then I've increasingly heard a bumping sound coming from the front driver's side wheel area whenever turning or going over very slight bumps. The Dodge dealership I took it to said it was the control arm, but that has since been replaced, and the sound still persists. A local mechanic that I went to said it is a bushing within the steering rack, but suggested that the noise was merely an annoyance and I should not have any safety concerns; however, the sound has just gotten worse and worse. The shop said they can replace the entire steering rack, but not an individual bushing because it is within the rack. Parts and time-wise, what is the cost of replacing this part, and how difficult is it to do? Any help is appreciated.
